Abstract: Road icing brings inconvenience to pedestrians' travel, and even causes some vehicles to slip and rearrange. And the surface of the aircraft can also lead to the freezing process, and then damage to the aircraft engine. Now, researchers at the University of Houston have thought of a surprising solution to the ice situation. Hadi Ghasemi of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Houston has developed a material that is a magnetically smooth surface (MAGSS) that prevents ice crystals from attaching to the surface of an object.
 
Researchers have also studied some of the coating, so that some of the equipment exposed to the winter is no longer frozen. But these coatings can not be widely used due to the high cost and so on. While one side of the MAGSS material is a magnetic coating and the other side is a thin layer of magnetic fluid made of iron oxide nanoparticles. When ice crystals come into contact with the magnetic fluid, the magnetic fluid will form a barrier, so that ice crystals can not be attached to the surface of the object.
 
The research team said that MAGSS materials can be used in minus 34 degrees of the environment, while the previous similar materials can only be used in minus 25 degrees of the environment.
 
The study was published in the journal Nature Communications.
